1. Relax on a Sunset Cruise along the Amalfi Coast

What better way to ease into your next Italian escape than aboard a yacht along the legendary Amalfi Coast. Nothing says ‘relaxation’ like a glass of champagne at sunset with the salty air against your skin. The Amalfi Coast is known for its beauty, but you don’t have to waste your time fighting the crowds on popular beaches. A private yacht cruise offers the opportunity to swim in hidden caves, dine on a menu of your choice and discover untouched beaches.

2. Explore Lake Como Aboard a Riva Vintage Boat

Lake Como is synonymous with luxurious indulgence. Imagine Michelin star restaurants, awe-inspiring landscapes and regal architecture, all at the water’s edge. One way to embrace the history and tradition of this unique destination while simultaneously enjoying its key feature – the lake – is to take a tour aboard a vintage Riva boat. The classic Italian craftsmanship of these boats is a sight to behold, and to glide across the water with the wind in your hair is, in our opinion, the best way to see all this dynamic region has to offer.

5 Amazing Places to Spend Winter in Italy

Contrary to popular belief, Italy is still a wonderful holiday destination during the winter months. Typically, summer lasts from June to September, after which the weather cools and the thrum of tourists return home. However, there is still plenty to see and do during the autumn and winter months from October to May. Allow us to introduce you to 5 amazing places to spend winter in Italy:

Lombardy

Move over France and Switzerland – Italy’s Lombardy region is gaining ground as a top ski destination, and for good reason. With fewer visitors and an excellent snowfall record, the crisp slopes of Livigno are a prime location for international skiing holidays. Wide pistes ensure an optimum environment for snowboarders, in particular. The slopes are a combination of 12 black, 37 red, and 29 blue runs so there are ample options for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels. Visit between November and April for the best powder conditions.

For a longer getaway, combine your ski experience with some quality time in Lake Como. Also situated in the Lombardy Region, Como can be found just a few hours south-west of Livigno. Although Lake Como is lauded as a summer destination, there is also something incredibly special about staying in a private villa during the winter months. Discover the picturesque towns that adorn its banks or embark on a water-based tour aboard a luxury Riva Boat.

The Dolomites

The Dolomites in autumn can only be described as otherworldly. Rows upon rows of larch trees change from a rich green to golden brown, the air is crisp and there are fewer people. This is also the prime season for photography, as the alpine glow transitions to a warm orange and rosy pink hue during this period.

In winter, the magnificent peaks of the Dolomite Mountains provide a wonderful playground for skiing, snowboarding and a variety of outdoor winter activities. If that isn’t reason enough, the Dolomites are also home to a past Olympic venue and the number one ski resort in the world. If winter sports aren’t your only interest, the region also offers rejuvenating thermal springs.

Rome

The country’s capital should definitely feature on your list for an off-season holiday in Italy. Rome is arguably the most visited city in Italy, making it a vibrant, but packed destination during peak season. Fortunately, winter in Rome is a wonderful chance to explore all the must-see sights without competing for a view. December is a particularly special time to visit as the city comes alive with twinkling Christmas lights.

Tuscany

Tuscany’s vineyards and lush, rolling hills are no less beautiful during the winter months, and are arguably even more striking as the leaves turn in autumn. More importantly, what could be better than an exclusive cooking class by a warm fire, or a private wine tasting tour in Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino? Soak up the views accompanied by a warming glass of red wine and explore each quaint town at your leisure. Additionally, why not try a sublime white truffle hunting experience between October and January?

Venice

Much like Rome, one of the major perks to an off-season tour of Venice is the peace and quiet. It is also a prime destination for a romantic escape. Explore the main island group of Venice, as well as the smaller surrounding groups such as Murano and Burano. No matter how cool the weather, nothing can compare to cuddling up under a blanket in a gondola for a tour of the city’s intricate canal network. Discover the best things to do in Venice by reading our latest blog.

Top 10 Things To Do In Venice

things to do in venice

Venice, or Venezia to the locals, is a place of immense beauty, rich cultural history, and labyrinthine waterways. Venice consists of 117 small islands connected by beautiful bridges and canals scattered with gondolas. As the city features on most travelers’ bucket-lists, allow us to guide you through some of the best things to do in Venice:

St. Mark's Basilica

St. Mark’s Basilica is a sublime piece of architecture dating back to 1092. Visually striking, it is lauded as one of the most important and impressive religious buildings in Northern Italy. Whether you follow the religion or not, the ornate details, Byzantine artwork, frescos and sculptures are truly breath-taking and worth seeing. Please note, as this is a place of religious significance, it is required that your shoulders and knees are covered when visiting.

St. Mark's Square

Known as the most famous piazza in Venice due to the impressively ornate buildings and archways that frame it, St. Mark’s Square is a perfect place to have an espresso and enjoy the views.

Murano

Like a much smaller Venice, Murano is also a group of small islands connected by man-made bridges and canals. The area is famous for its glass blowing, which can be witnessed in fabulous displays at numerous local factories. During your time here, we recommend seeing the Basilica dei Santa Maria, Palazzo Da Mula and Campo Santo Stefano as well.

Burano

Another mini replica of Venice, Burano is known to produce the most exquisite lace on the continent. Meander through its picturesque streets, enjoy some local fare, and marvel at the technicolour houses.

Torcello

While you’re exploring other island groups, add Torcello to the list. Home to a 7th century cathedral and the ruins of its baptistery, it is a true Byzantine masterpiece.

Bridges

Arching impressively over the vast Grand Canal, the Ponte di Rialto is undoubtedly the most famous and iconic bridge of Venice. The bridge connects the districts of San Marco and San Polo but also serves as a wonderful photo opportunity.

Another important piece of architecture and history is the Bridge of Sighs. Although small, it is said that this bridge served as part of the prison walk from the palace for criminals which, upon crossing, legend has it would take a final look at the city and sigh. The bridge symbolised a crossing from freedom to imminent incarceration.

Explore the Grand Canal

One of the most magical ways to experience Venice is by boat, so why not do it in style? Prepare for the epitome of luxury travel and board the embodiment of “La Dolce Vita”, a Riva Boat. Largely considered the jewels of Italy’s waters, make sure to ask for the story of Ernesto Riva during your tour.

San Marco Campanile

Although remarkable when viewed from the ground, there is nothing quite like the panoramic views from the summit of San Marco Campanile. Originally erected in the 9th century as a watch tower, the Campanile unfortunately collapsed in 1902 due to damage caused by fire, earthquakes and lightning throughout the years. Fastidiously rebuilt, the current tower stands at an impressive 98.6m high and is really a structure to behold.

San Giorgio Maggiore

Located on a small, separate island a short distance from the Venice Basin is San Giorgio Maggiore. Standing proud and visible from the shores of Venice are the majestic San Giorgio Monastery, the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore and a large tower that mirrors San Marco’s campanile. Photo opportunities and age-old secrets abound so take adequate time to explore.

Doges Palace

Last, but my no means least, is Doges Palace. Flaunting its impressive design and earning its name as one of the most renowned buildings in Venice, the façade features white stone arches inlayed with intricate diamond designs. Once inside, each of the impressively decorated rooms boast original artwork, furniture and spectacular detail. Our guests can enjoy a private tour of this captivating piece of history.
